Why You'd Password-Protect a PDF
A PDF with no password can be opened by anyone who gets hold of the file — attached to the wrong email, left in a shared Downloads folder, or forwarded further than you intended. Adding a password means the file itself won't open without it, regardless of where a copy ends up. This tool sets an open password: the file simply won't render at all until the correct password is entered.
Common Situations
Emailing a payslip, tax document, or bank statement, sending a signed contract that shouldn't be forwarded without the recipient controlling access, or archiving personal documents (passports, ID scans) on a shared or cloud drive.
How to Use
1. Upload your PDF.
2. Enter the password you want to protect it with.
3. Click Protect PDF.
4. Download the protected file, and share the password with the recipient through a separate channel (not the same email).
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I forget the password?
There's no way to recover it — the password isn't stored anywhere by this tool or by us. Keep it somewhere safe (a password manager works well) before you close the tab.
Does this stop someone from printing or copying text, even if they know the password?
No — this sets a single open password that gates access to the file entirely. It doesn't set separate permissions for printing, copying, or editing once someone has the password.
Will this work on a PDF that's already password-protected?
Remove the existing password first with Unlock PDF, then apply a new one here.
