Frequently Asked Questions
Running pace is the time it takes to cover a set distance — typically expressed as minutes per kilometer or minutes per mile. A pace of 6:00/km means you run 1 kilometer every 6 minutes. Pace = Time ÷ Distance.
Average recreational runner: 6–7 min/km (9:30–11 min/mile). Intermediate: 5–6 min/km (8–9:30/mile). Advanced: under 5 min/km (under 8 min/mile). Elite marathon runners maintain paces under 3 min/km. 'Good' depends entirely on your experience level and goals.
Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km). Example: 6 min/km pace = 60 ÷ 6 = 10 km/h. In miles: Speed (mph) = 60 ÷ pace (min/mile).
A sub-4-hour marathon (42.195km) requires an average pace of 5:41/km or 9:09/mile. For a half marathon sub-2-hour, you need 5:41/km. For a 5K under 25 minutes, you need 5:00/km.
Climbing 100m per km adds roughly 60–90 seconds per km to your pace. Descent helps but not proportionally — steep downhills can actually slow some runners due to braking. Many GPS watches offer grade-adjusted pace to normalize for elevation.
